A controlled pause that accidentally becomes dramatic.

Then:

• sudden bursts of laughter at nothing visible

• whispering entire paragraphs like you’re being followed

• re-recording the same sentence 19 times but each time with more despair, less dignity

• saying things like “no, that’s too stable” out loud to yourself

Which, from outside the room, is indistinguishable from ritual behavior.

At any given moment, the FBI could potentially discover that I’ve recently researched:

• how long someone can survive trapped underground,

• the psychology of obsession,

• luxury penthouse architecture,

• knife wound recovery times,

• whether old cargo ships still use manual engine rooms,

• sedative effects,

• funeral customs,

• bullet damages, listed by bullet,

• and “can emotional tension alone kill a person.”

Which means I either:

1. write dark romance and horror fiction,
   or

2. am personally becoming a national concern.

The line grows thinner every day.

People often ask what it’s like writing romance-horror and romance-erotica, and honestly, the answer is:
deeply emotionally irresponsible.

Because no one warns you that eventually fictional characters stop feeling fictional.

At first they’re just concepts.
A scene idea.
A vibe.
A morally questionable man leaning against a doorway with dangerous eye contact.

Then suddenly it’s three months later and you’re emotionally invested in whether he survives the catastrophic psychological spiral you created for him at 2:17 a.m.

This is how writers accidentally ruin their own lives.

And the worst part?
The readers encourage it.

Respectfully, some of you are absolutely feral about red flags.

I could write a character who:

• threatens people,

• disappears mysteriously for six chapters,

• owns an alarming number of weapons,

• emotionally self-destructs in beautiful lighting,

• and says things no therapist would approve of—

…and the comments immediately become:

“I can fix him.”

“Actually I support his decisions.”

“Your Honor, he was emotionally gorgeous.”

Meanwhile I’m sitting there like:
I specifically designed this man to be concerning.

But apparently if a fictional character:

• has trauma,

• stares intensely,

• speaks in low dangerous dialogue,

• and experiences emotional devastation attractively enough—

society simply collapses.

And horror readers are no better.

Horror readers see a haunted mansion, suspicious noises, blood in the hallway, and an obviously cursed object and immediately go:

“Honestly? I’d still enter the basement.”

No survival instincts whatsoever.
Just vibes.

Which is probably why romance and horror work so well together in the first place.

Both genres are fundamentally about obsession.

One says:

“I would die for you.”

The other says:

“Interesting. Let’s test that theory.”

And somehow my brain looked at both genres and decided:

Yes.
Combine them.
Make everyone emotionally unstable.

So now I spend my days carefully constructing immersive fictional worlds while simultaneously destroying my own emotional peace.

For example:
normal people hear music and think:

“This song is nice.”

Writers hear music and immediately hallucinate entire cinematic tragedies.

One instrumental soundtrack later and suddenly I’m envisioning:

• rain-soaked confessions,

• betrayal scenes,

• slow-burning tension,

• terrifying discoveries,

• emotionally catastrophic kisses,

• and somebody dramatically bleeding in expensive clothing.

This is apparently my hobby now.

And don’t even get me started on writing devastating scenes.

Because there comes a point where you realize:
you are actively manufacturing emotional damage for entertainment purposes.

I’ll sit there typing something absolutely soul-crushing while quietly thinking:

Oh this is going to ruin people beautifully.

Then I post it online and watch readers collectively spiral in real time.

Which, creatively speaking, is incredibly rewarding.

Emotionally?
Concerning.

The truly dangerous part, however, is becoming attached to the characters themselves.

Because writers start out believing they control the story.

This is adorable optimism.

Eventually the characters become so psychologically real in your head that they start making decisions you didn’t originally plan, and suddenly you’re arguing internally with fictional people who technically do not exist.

I have genuinely sat at my computer muttering:

“Why would you DO that?”

“This is why your life is terrible.”

“Stop flirting during active danger.”

As though these people can hear me.

Sometimes I think they probably can.

At this point my stories have become less:

“I am carefully crafting literature”

and more:

“I am supervising several emotionally attractive disasters.”

And honestly?
I regret nothing.

Because despite the chaos, there’s something incredibly fun about building stories that make people:

• feel obsessed,

• laugh unexpectedly,

• panic emotionally,

• fall in love with terrible decisions,

• and occasionally stare at the ceiling after a chapter wondering what exactly just happened to them psychologically.

That’s the kind of storytelling I love most.

Not perfectly clean stories.
Not emotionally safe stories.

Stories that linger.
Stories that haunt.
Stories that seduce.
Stories that spiral.

Stories that make readers message me at 1 a.m. like:

“Respectfully, Chapter 14 has altered my brain chemistry.”

To which I say:
excellent.
The system is working perfectly.

So yes, I continue writing romance, horror, desire, disaster, emotional catastrophes, suspiciously attractive villains, and enough tension to potentially qualify as a public safety issue.

Those disappeared several fictional disasters ago.

No, I mean the moment when you suddenly find yourself researching professional recording microphones at 1:42 a.m. while whispering things like:

“But does this one capture emotional devastation clearly?”

Because apparently, we are no longer simply writing dark romance, horror, and emotionally catastrophic fictional people.

No.
Now we are preparing to hear them.

Summer 2026 is approaching, which means I’ve officially entered the deeply dangerous phase of audiobook production where I become obsessed with audio equipment I did not even know existed three weeks ago.

Friends, why are there so many knobs?

Why does every microphone look like it belongs either:

1. in a luxury podcast studio,

2. a spaceship,
   or

3. the interrogation room of a very attractive supervillain?

And don’t even get me started on the DJ sound panels.

Because naturally, instead of behaving responsibly and purchasing a simple recording setup like a calm professional adult, I immediately became fascinated by:

• voice effects

• atmospheric sound buttons

• dramatic reverb

• thunderstorm noises

• ominous ambience

• buttons that probably summon demons if pressed incorrectly

You mean to tell me I can potentially record:

• whispered threats,

• emotionally devastating confessions,

• morally questionable flirting,

• horror monologues,
  AND

• full cinematic tension

…while also having access to dramatic sound effects?

This feels less like “buying a microphone” and more like accidentally becoming the final boss in a psychological thriller.

Honestly, I fear for the microphone itself.

Somewhere out there is a perfectly innocent piece of audio equipment that has absolutely no idea it’s about to spend its existence listening to:

• forbidden tension,

• dangerous chemistry,

• emotionally unstable people making catastrophic decisions,

• and scenes so intense even I occasionally stare at the document afterward like:

“Well. That escalated quickly.”

And yes.
Before anyone asks:
the romance-erotica scenes will remain faithful to the stories.

Which means there is a very real future version of me sitting alone in a room, staring directly into an expensive microphone, trying to professionally narrate lines that absolutely would have killed a Victorian man instantly.

Imagine being the microphone for that experience.

Actually don’t.
It deserves privacy.

The funniest part is that audiobook narration sounds incredibly glamorous until you remember what recording actually involves.

At some point I will inevitably have to:

• redo the same sentence fourteen times,

• pause dramatically to sip water,

• clear my throat like a haunted Victorian widow,

• accidentally mispronounce a character’s name,

• emotionally recover from my own plot twists,

• and try not to laugh during scenes that sound completely insane out of context.

Because let’s be honest:
a lot of fictional dialogue becomes deeply concerning when heard through a wall.

Which brings me to another issue.

My neighbors.

There is absolutely no way these people are prepared for what’s coming.

One day they’re going to peacefully exist in their homes, minding their business, and suddenly hear muffled phrases like:

“Don’t touch that knife.”

“Lock the door.”

“If you look at me like that again, we’re both making terrible decisions.”

At that point I can only assume several neighborhood group chats will be created.

And somehow horror scenes may actually be easier than romance scenes.

Because screaming into a microphone?
Fine.
Easy.
Spiritually natural, even.

But trying to maintain professional composure while recording devastatingly intimate tension with a straight face?

That requires strength I may not possess.

Especially when some of you are already behaving deeply irresponsibly in the comments section over fictional characters who:

• wave obvious red flags,

• commit emotional crimes,

• stare too intensely,

• or threaten people in an attractive voice.

You’re all enabling this.

Respectfully.

Still, I’m genuinely excited about this process because I don’t want these audio versions to feel rushed or lifeless. I want them to feel immersive. Cinematic. Intimate. Like you’re sitting directly inside the atmosphere of the story while everything slowly spirals into chaos around you.

I want the tension to sound sharp.
I want the horror to breathe.
I want the emotional moments to land properly.
And yes, I want certain scenes to make people pause the audio and stare into the middle distance for a minute.

That’s art.
